Why You Should Use a Wine Rack

For wine to mature well, you must be able to maintain the right humidity, temperature, lighting conditions, and movement.

Whenever you are storing wine for any amount of time, you want to ensure that the wine is in a safe place. Even though there are a few different ways that you can store wine, none are better than using a wine rack.

When you select a wine rack, remember to choose one that will store your wine properly. That means, a rack which stores the wine in a way which is stable and free from movement, well sheltered, using full partitioning for the cell walls, instead of a scaffold or rail type of arrangement.

Also, structural integrity is essential, so the rack will withstand a sudden jolt, impact or earthquake, should one occur. So it is important that your rack uses a full system of gussets, or thick cell walls made of wood or clay.

Wood works well as it tends not to retain heat. Clay works too, as it absorbs moisture from the air, providing a type of organic air conditioning.

There are a several styles to choose from, including those which stack, wall mount or side mount.

Pay attention to overall rack and cell size too, as the size dictates the quantities which you can store on site.

Among the best types of wine racks are the horizontal racks. Contrary to what many may think, vertical racks aren’t a good choice for storing your wine. Wine stored in vertical racks is stored upright, with the cork being distanced from the wine. In this instance the cork will dry out and eventually start to shrink, bringing air into the wine and oxidizing it.

Tilted racks are the other style of rack to avoid using, as they tend to dry out the corks or allow the sediments to settle too close to the cork.

For your wine storing needs, go with a horizontal rack.

Horizontal racks keep the cork moist, and stop air from making contact with the wine.

Sediments will fall towards the side of the bottle, preventing spillage when you uncork the wine.

Horizontal racks are very affordable and extensible. Some horizontal racks span the entire four walls of a cellar, facilitation maximum wine storage, and appreciation in value.

Money may not grow on trees, but it can be made in wine racks.

The materials used to build wine racks are normally wood, metal or clay.

Hang your rack from the ceiling, mount it on the wall, or simply place it on the floor.

Metal racks are the strongest, although wood is more flexible. Wooden racks are visually appealing, durable, and provide plenty of strength.

All in all, a wine rack is a fine investment for anyone who appreciates wine. There are various sizes to choose from, all of which are very affordable. The small to medium sizes work best for homes, while the large sizes work well in commercial settings.

But no matter where you keep your wine, you can count on a good wine rack to help your wine to improve for years to come.
